#50 混乱する単語 'Remember' と 'Remind'

本日は、Espresso English チャンネルさんからです。

 動画のタイトルは、

"Remember or Remind? Learn the difference!"
「'Remember' と 'Remind' の違い」

です。

混乱しやすい単語  'Remember' と 'Remind'  を解説している動画です。

この二つの単語の共通点は  're'  「再び」で、「記憶を思い出す」ということですが、この二つの単語には大きな違いがあります。

それは、

1)  'remember'  は、

「自分が自分の過去の記憶を思い出す、過去の出来事を憶えている」です。

例えば、

I remember going to the beach with my grandparents when I was a child.
「子供の時、祖父母とビーチに行ったことを憶えています」

I remember swimming in the ocean.
「海で泳いだのを憶えています」

です。

それに対して、

2)  'remind'  は、

「誰かが或いは何かが、私に或いは誰かに記憶を思い出させる、気付かせる」です。

例えば、

The dentist recently called me to remind me that I have a dentist appointment on Friday.
「つい先日歯科医院が、金曜日に予約があることを私に思い出させるために電話してきました」

This song reminds me of my first boyfriend.
「この歌は私に初めてのボーイフレンドのことを思い出させます」

です。

では、

▸ どのような文の構造かというと、

'remember' は、

1)  remember + noun （名詞）

I remember that game.

2)  remember + that + subject （主語） +  verb （動詞）

I remember that she had brown hair.
（ that は省略可能）

3)  remember + ing 形 　
（過去の行動、出来事を憶えている）

I remember going to the beach.
I remember swimming in the ocean.
I remember playing in the sand.

4)  remember + to 動詞原形 （～を憶えておく）

Remember to put gas in the car.
Remember to go to the post office and mail the letter.

'remind'  は、

1)  remind  +  person  +  that　
（～に～を思い出させる、気付かせる）

My dentist reminded me hat I have an appointment.
I reminded  my husband that the car needs gas.

2)  remind  +  person  +  of　（～に～を思い出させる）

This song reminds me of my boyfriend.
This food reminds me of my grandmother.
The article reminded me of a book that I read in the past.

3)  remind  +  person  +  to
（～に～することを思い出させる、気付かせる）

My husband reminded me to put gas in the car.
I reminded my brother to take out the garbage.
I reminded my students to do their homework.
