#40 混乱する英単語 'to' と 'towards'

本日は、Crown Academy of English チャンネルさんからです。

動画のタイトルは、

"To" and "towards" - Confusing English words | Vocabulary
「混乱する英単語 'to' と 'towards'」

to  /tə/, /tu/, /tuː/

towards  /təˈwɔːdz/

です。

この２単語の『共通点』は、

どちらも「前置詞」で「動き」を表しますが、

『違い』は、
1)  Sarah is walking towards the library.

towards は、「向かっている方向」を表しているのに対して、

2)  Jane is walking to the library.

to は、「最終地点」を表しています。

また、

towards イギリス英語
toward  アメリカ英語

と綴りの違いがあります。

そして

3)  「サーラが図書館に行く」とします。

Sarah is going to the library

「図書館が目的地ですが、その途中公園があり、公園に向かって歩いている場合」

Sara is going to the library. She is walking towards the park.

です。

そして、

公園を通り越して目的地の図書館に向かっている場合は、

Sarah is going to the library. She is also waking towards the library.

になります。
