#72 英語を滑らかにする砕けた表現 'or something'

【英語リスニング・チャレンジ #72】

昨日に続いて、Cambridge English チャンネルさんの動画です。

'Informal' な会話で、英語ネイティブ・スピーカーが単語を２つ、３つ繋げた決まり文句の

'Chunks'   /tʃʌŋks/   「（言葉の）塊」

についてです。

今回の動画は、

'or something'
'or something like that'

です。

日本語にすると、

「～か何かかな」
「そんなところかな、そんなものかな」

という感じになります。

動画に出てくる説明は、

1)  When people give information in everyday conversation, they don't need to be precise or give every detail.
「日常会話で情報を伝える時は、正確に、全てのことを伝える必要はありません」

precise   /prɪˈsaɪs/   「正確な」
detail    /ˈdiːteɪl/   「詳細」

2)  Being precise is often important in academic and professional contexts but can sound too formal in social conversation.
「正確であるということは、学術的な専門的な文脈では重要ですが、人との交流の会話では、とても堅苦しく聞こえます」

academic   /ˌækəˈdemɪk/   「学術的な」
professional   /prəˈfeʃənl/   「専門的な」
context   /ˈkɒntekst/  「文脈」

3)  Jamie and Clare use quite vague expressions;
「ジェイミーとクレアは曖昧な表現を使っています」

vague   /veɪɡ/   「曖昧な、あやふやな」
expression    /ɪkˈspreʃn/   「表現」

He says 'or something' and 'or something like that'.
「彼は、『～か何か または、そのようなものかな』と言っています」

Clare asks him 'what kind of stuff' he does.
「クレアは彼に『どんな感じのこと』をするのか聞いています」

and she says 'like in the evenings'.
「そして彼女は『夜などは』と言っています」

stuff   /stʌf/   「事柄、色々なこと」」
like   /laɪk/   「～のような」 （前置詞）

4)  二人の会話

What kind of stuff?　「どんな感じのこと？」

- eat breakfast or something.  
「朝食食べたりとか」
- go to bed at ten-thirty or something like that.
「１０時半に寝るとか、そんなとこかな」

5)  When people hear these vague words and expressions, they know what the other person means, and don't need to ask for more details.
「このような曖昧な言葉や表現を聞いた時、話し手が何を言おうとしているか分かるので、それ以上詳しく質問する必要はありません」

です。
