#68 ネイティブも間違える "Less と Fewer"

本日は、Sir English チャンネルさんからです。

動画のタイトルは、

Common Mistakes "Less vs Fewer"
「よくある間違い "Less vs Fewer"」

です。

Anthony さんは、英語のネイティブ・スピーカーも間違える、と言っています。

▸ Less  /les/  は、little  /ˈlɪtl/ の比較で、最上級は least  /liːst/  です。

▸ Fewer  /ˈfjuːə/  は、few  /fjuː/ の比較級で、最上級は fewest  /ˈfjuːɪst/ です。

Less も Fewer も意味は「～より少ない」ですが、使われ方に違いがあります。

例えば、

× I have less books than you.　ではなく、
⇒ I have fewer books than you.　です。

× There are less cars in London than Beijing.　ではなく、
⇒ There are fewer cars in London than Beijing.　です。

この使われ方の違いは、
Countable nouns に付くか、Uncountable nouns に付くか、という違いがあります。

Countable nouns  /ˈkaʊntəbl ˌnaʊn/  とは
「数えられる名詞」で、

Uncountable nouns  /ˈkaʊntəbl ˌnaʊn/  とは
「数えられない名詞」です。

「数えられる」「数えられない」というコンセプトは日本語にないので、私たちが間違えやすい一つです。「数えられる」名詞には複数形は S を付けます（例外もあります）。

この S を忘れて発音してしまうんです、これを私もよくします。(6￣ ￣)ゞ

そして、

1)  Less は uncountable nouns に付き、

名詞は、

milk, sugar, pollution

その他に、

    music, art, love, happiness,
    advice, information, news,
    furniture, luggage, scenery
    rice, sugar, butter, water,
    electricity, gas, power, wine,
    money, currency, travel, etc,

などの名詞があり、

2)  Fewer は countable nouns に付き、

名詞は、

eggs, people, pencils.

その他に、

　dog, cat, animal, book,report,
　dollar, song, suitcase, table,
　battery, bottle, tip, journey,
　job, view,  etc

など色々な名詞があります。

では、

動画の例は、

3)  Fewer

Fewer and fewer people are using CDs now.
「現在 CD を使用する人がますます少なくなっています」

Seoul has much fewer historical buildings than London.
「ソウルはロンドンより歴史的建造物がはるかに少ないです」

Our school has fewer books than most other schools.
「私たちの学校は他のほとんどの学校よりも本が少ないです。」

4)  Less

I'm going to eat less chocolate to try and lose weight.
「体重を減らすためにチョコレートを減らすつもりです。」

There is much less pollution in the city than before.
「都市の汚染は、以前よりもずっと少なくなった。」

The company is putting less and less sugar in its food products, which is good.
「その食品会社が、会社の商品に砂糖をより少なく使用していことは良いことです。

5)  less と fewer を「強調」するのに、much 「とても、非常に」が使われます。
