#7 冠詞 A, An, The について

本日の動画は、englishgrammarspot チャンネルさんからです。

日本語にはない、articles 冠詞について説明しています。

冠詞とは、A, An, The のことです。

日本語にはないので会話の時に私もよく抜かしてしまいます。（^^;）

どんな単語に付くかと言うと、、

'A' は、子音の音の前につきます。

Before a word that starts with a consonant.

consonant   /ˈkɒnsənənt/ ：「子音」

a blue bird
a nice man
a wonderful dinner

'An' は、母音の音の前につきます。

Before a word that starts with a vowel

vowel  /ˈvaʊəl/  は、「母音」です。

an apple   /əˈnæpl/
an egg   /əˈneɡ/
an insect   /əˈnɪnsekt/

子音、母音の「音」と言ったのは、

hour /ˈaʊə/ は、単語は子音で始まっていますが、音としては h は発音されず、母音 /a/ で始まっています。なので an が付きます。

an hour   (not a hour)

unique  /juːˈniːk/　は、母音 u で始まっていますが、音は /j/ から始まっているので、

a unique chance   (not an unique chance)

になります。

では、"A and An" と "The" の違いですが、これは、

"indefinite and definite"
「不特定の名詞につく」と「特定された名詞につく」です。

"A and An" は、一般的なものを表します。
Then indefinite article describes things in general.

A dog barks.　「一匹の犬が吠えます」
「犬」は一般的な犬のことです。

The definite article describes specific things
特定なものを表す場合は、the が付きます。

The dog barks.　「その犬は吠えます」
「犬」は、一般的な犬ではなく、「その犬」と特定されます。

付け加えますが、"A and An" は、「一つ、一匹、一人」と「１」の意味があります。なので１つと数えられる、「数えられる名詞」(countable noun) につきます。

では、article 冠詞がつかないケースにはどんなものがあるのかというと、

Zero article

-> たった一人しかいないと分かる場合、付きません。

Sally is head teacher　「サリーは校長です」
イギリスでは、"head teacher"
アメリカでは、"principal" /ˈprɪnsəpl/ です。

Elizabeth ll is queen of the United Kingdom
「エリザベス二世は英国女王です」

-> 一般的な季節の場合は article を省く時がある。

Spring is in the air.
「春が空気の中にある（春めいている）」

でも特定の季節には the がつきます。

I visited her in the spring of 2012.
「２０１２年の春に彼女を訪ねた」

-> 一般的な食事を言う時は article は付きません。

When shall we have lunch?
「いつ一緒に昼食をしますか？」

でも、特定の食事については the がつきます。
I was very happy with the lunch she served.
「彼女が給仕してくれた昼食にとても満足しています」

-> 一般的な Church, hospital, prison, school, university には article は付きません。

He went to university last year.　
「彼は昨年大学に行った」

特定の大学を言う場合は the がつきます。

The university is well situated.　
「その大学は良い環境にある（施設に恵まれている）」

-> languages（言語）については article が付きません。
