#149 前置詞としての 'like'

本日は、Smrt English チャンネルさんからです。

動画のタイトルは、

"Like" as a Preposition
「前置詞としての 'like'」

です。

動詞としての 'like' はご存知でも、前置詞としての 'like' をご存知でない方が結構いらっしゃるんではないでしょうか。

或いは、これを使った表現は普段の会話でよくでて来るので、表現として知っているけれど、これが前置詞だということは知らない、という方もいらっしゃるかもしれません。

ではその表現はというと、

1)  What + be + like?

この文の意味は、

Please describe something.
「何かを説明してください」
Please give me a description.
「説明を私にしてください」

ということです。

例えば、

Please describe your country.
「あなたの国について説明して下さい」

を、 What + be + like? に当てはた文は、

▸ What's your country like?
（What is your country like?）

になります。

日本語に訳すと、

「あなたの国はどんか感じのところすか？」

になります。

その返事としては、

It's pretty big, warm, and cheap.
「まあ大きくて、暖かくて、安いです」

などです。

次の例は、

▸ What are your mother and father like?
「あなたのご両親はどんな感じの方ですか？」

My mother is really friendly and nice, but my father is a little more quiet.
「母はとてもフレンドリーで良い人です、しかし父は少し静かです」

▸ What was the movie like last night?（過去形）
「昨夜の映画はどんな感じでしたか？」
= Please describe the movie from last night.
「昨夜の映画を説明して下さい」

その返事は、

Um, it was okay. The actors were great, but the story was slightly boring.
「そうですね、良かったです。俳優は素晴らしかったですが、ストーリーはちょっと退屈でした」

などです。

3)  How ...?

Please tell me about your health.
「あなたの健康について私に話してください」
Please tell me about your happiness.
「あなたの幸せについて私に話してください」

と言う時は、How ...? の表現になります。

▸ How are you?　「お元気ですか」
= Are you healthy?　「健康ですか？」
= Are you happy?　「幸せですか？」

▸ How is your mother?　「あなたのお母さんは元気ですか？」
= Is she healthy?　「彼女は健康ですか？」
= Is she happy?　「彼女は幸せですか？」

または、短い返事です。

Please give me a short reaction.
「短い反応を下さい」

▸ How's the food?　「食事はいかがですか？」
(How is the food?)
= Is it okay?　「それは大丈夫ですか？」

▸ How was the movie?　「その映画はどうでしたか？」
= Was the movie okay?　「その映画は良かったですか？」

3)  What + be + like? / How .....?　の違い

▸ How is your family?　「あなたの家族はいかがですか？」
= Is your family happy?　「幸せですか？」
= Is your family healthy?　「健康ですか？」

They're doing really well these days.
「最近とっても調子が良いです」

▸ What's your family like?　
「あなたの家族はどんな感じですか？」
= Please describe your family.
「あなたの家族を説明して下さい」

My family? There are four people in my family. Myself, my brother, my mother and my father. My mother is a kind woman and she is a teacher ...

と長い答えになります。

最後に、

'How' と 'like' がひっついた質問文は存在しません。

そして、'How' の質問の時は短い答えで、'What + be + like?' の質問の時は長めの答えになります。

毎回スカイプ英会話の時に 'What + be + like?' の表現を言います。

それは、

What's the weather like in Tokyo?
「東京のお天気はどんな感じですか？」

です。
