「単語 'Give' を使った、よく使われる表現５つ」

'Give' は『不規則動詞』で、
past simple 「現在形」: gave /ɡeɪv/
past participle 「過去分詞」: given /ˈɡɪvn/
です。
では、その５つの表現とは、
1) to give up
= to quit
「やめる」
I am trying to give up smoking.
「タバコをやめる努力をしています」
□ Would you like a cigarette?
「タバコはいかがですか？」
■ No thanks. I have given up.
「いいえ、ありがとうございます。タバコを止めているんです」
Sarah gave up chocolate 2 years ago.
「サラは２年前にチョコレートをやめました」
2) to give something away
= to give something for free.
「無償であげる、贈る、与える」
The supermarket is giving away T-shirts.
「スーパーマーケットがＴシャツを配っています」
□ Do you want my old mobile phone?
「私の古い携帯欲しいですか？」
■ How much are you selling it for?
「いくらで売っているんですか？」
□ Nothing. I'm giving it away.
「ただです、あげるんです」
3) to give someone a hand
= to help someone
「手伝う」
▸ to give someone a hand with something
「～の～に手を貸す」
I gave Mark a hand with his bags.
「マークのカバンを持つのに手を貸しました」
□ Please give me a hand with my homework.
「私の宿題を手伝ってもらえますか？」
▸ to give someone a hand to do something.
「～の～をするのを手伝う」
I gave Mark a hand to carry his bags.
「マークのバックを運ぶのを手伝いました」
□ Please give me a hand to do my homework.
「私の宿題をするのを手伝ってもらえますか？」
4) to give someone a lift （イギリス英語）
= to transport someone to their destination in your car.
「車に乗せてあげる」
□ We're going to the cinema. Can you give us a lift?
「映画館に行くんですが、車に乗せてもらえますか？」
I give the children a lift to school when it's raining.
「雨が降った時は子供を学校まで車に乗せます」

to give someone a ride
■ Can you give me a ride to the office?
「オフィスまで乗せて行ってもらえますか？」
■ I gave Mrs.Smith a ride to the supermarket yesterday.

= to make a promise to someone
「言葉を与える（約束する）」
Mark has given me his word that he will tidy his bedroom.
「マークは彼の部屋を整頓すると私に言葉をくれました（約束しました）」
□ Do you promise to visit me in London?
「私に会いにロンドンに来てくれると約束してくれますか？」
■ Yes, I give you my word.
「はい、私の言葉をあげます（約束します）」
I don't believe that you will help me. Give me your word!
「あなたが私を助けてくれるなんて信じられません。あなたの言葉をください（約束して下さい）」
です。
