#210 「栓を開ける」などの８つの句動詞

動画のタイトルは、

"Learn 8 Phrasal Verbs for opening: pop open, peel off, flip up..."
「栓などを開けるという８つの句動詞」

です。

1)  twist off the cap 「キャップをねじって取る」

I can twist off the cap of a bottle.
「（ワインなど）瓶のキャップをねじって取れます」

2)  flip up the lid 「フタを跳ね上げる」

flip down the lid とはいいません。

閉める時は、close です。

3)  peel off the top 「上を剥がす」

ヨーグルトなどのフタを開ける時に言います。

4)  bust into a pack of sugar 「砂糖の袋を開ける」

bust  /bʌst/ 「破裂する」

これはスラングだそうです。

砂糖の袋やポテトチップスの袋を開けたりする時に袋を勢いよく開けると中身が飛び散ることがあることからこういうスラングができたようです。

5)  crack open a beer / a pop 「パンとビール / ソフトドリンクの缶を開ける」

I cracked open a beer.

I'm going to crack open a beer.

6)  take off the lid / cap 「（マジックペンなど）キャップを取る」

I can take off the lid of my marker.

put on the lid  「キャップを付ける」

7)  pop open the container 「（スプレーなど）フタを開ける」

I can pop open a container.

8)  pump out some soap 「（ハンドソープなど）押してソープを出す」

I'm going to pump our some soap

「手短な単語 - 危険にさらされて」

です。

on the line の意味は、

at serious risk of failing 「失敗する深刻な危険」

being harmed 「危害を加えられる」

being embarrassed 「恥ずかしい思いをする」

例文は、

1) He put the job on the line when he directly disobeyed the boss' orders.
「上司の命令に直接背いたことで、彼は仕事を危険にさらした」

disobey  /ˌdɪsəˈbeɪ/ 「背いた、従順でない」

He has risked losing his job. 

His job is in danger. 

The boss might fire him.

2) Police officers put their lives on the line every day.
「警察官は毎日命をかけて仕事をしています。」

They could be killed or they could be harmed or injured

3) I really have a lot on the line with this game. I hope my team wins.
「この試合には、本当にたくさんのことがかかっているんだ。自分のチームが勝つことを願っています」

Probably I bet a lot of money on this game and I need this team to win.

If my team loses, that means I'm gonna risk failing. I'm gonna risk losing a lot of money.

4) I have a lot on the line in asking out this girl because I could be really embarrassed.
「この女の子を（デートに）誘うのは用意ではない。（断られたら）恥ずかしい思いをするかもしれないから」

There's a girl and I really like her. I wanna go ask her on a date. All of my friends are here and they're gonna see me go talk to this girl.

If she rejects me, if she says no and she's not interested in me, I have a lot on the line in this situation. Because I'm risking failing or being embarrassed in front of all of my friends if I fail.

などです。

3) 会話のスクリプトは動画の詳細に書かれているので、それをご参照下さい。

その会話の中で意見を求める時、意見を言う時の出だしはこちらです。

#207 'How' の質問の答え方

本日の動画は、

Learn English with Bob the Canadianチャンネルさんからです。

動画のタイトルは、

"How to Respond to These Common 'How' Questions in English"
「英語でよくある 'How' の質問にどう答えるか？」

です。

文の形は、

How is something going?
「〜はどうですか？」

例文は、

How's your summer going?
「夏はいかがお過ごしですか？」

How's your new job going?
「新しい仕事はどうですか？」

How's your trip going?
「旅行はいかがですか？」

などで、

この質問に対しての返事の仕方です。

1) How's your summer going?

▷ So far, so good!
  「今のところとても良いです」

It doesn't mean that everything's been amazing.
「全てがとても素晴らしいというわけではないです」

It doesn't mean that everything's been badly.
「全てが悪く進んでいるわけではないです」

It means that up until this point, things have been going pretty well.
「今までのところ、とても良い具合に進んでいるという意味です」

2) How's your new job going?
  「新しい仕事はどうですか？」

▷ I can't complain!
 「文句をつけられません」

It means that up until this point, nothing bad has happened.
「今までのところ、悪いことは何もありません」

There is nothing to complain about.
「文句をつけることは何もありません」

ということは、

Everything has been pretty good.
「全てがかなり順調です。」

3) How's your new workout going?
  「新しいワークアウトはどうですか？」

▷ Pretty good so far!
  「今のところかなり良いです。」

It means the same as so far, so good.
「'so far, so good!' と同じ意味です」

4) How's school going?
  「学校はどうですか？」

▷ Not too bad!
  「そんなに悪くないです」

It doesn't mean that school is amazing.
「学校がとても素晴らしいではありません」

It doesn't mean that school is going badly for them.
「学校が彼らにとって悪く進んでいるわけではないです」

It means that they are doing fine.
「彼らはうまくやっているという意味です」

They are probably enjoying it.
「彼らは多分楽しんでいるんでしょう」

です。

'How' の返答、

So far, so good!

I can't complain!

Pretty good so far!

Not too bad!

#206 語彙を学ぶ look, look like, look alike

本日の動画は、Adam’s English Lessons · engVidチャンネルさんからです。

動画のタイトルは、

"Learn Vocabulary - look, look like, look alike, look as if..."
「語彙を学ぶ - look, look like, look alike, look as if ...」

です。

1)  Look（動詞）
   「〜に見える」

He looks happy.
「彼は幸せに見える、楽しそうに見える」

She looks sad.
「彼女は悲しそうに見える」

2) Look（動詞）＋ like（前置詞）
   「～のように見える」

It looks like it's going to rain.
「雨が降ってくるように見える」
「雨がふりそうです」

この文は厳密に言うと間違った文法だそうです。

ですが、

英語ネイティブスピーカーの方々もこの表現を
日常会話に使うそうです。

なので、私達もこの表現を言っても問題ありません。

ただ、論文を書いたり、正式な文章を書かないと行けない時は、
正しい文法を書かないといけませんね。

文法的に正しいのは、
--> It looks like rain.

そして look の後に文を入れる正しい文法は、

It looks as if it was going to rain.
It looks as if it were going to rain.
「まるで雨が降ってくるかのように見えます」

It looks as though it was going to rain.
「まるで雨が降ってくるかのように見えます」

です。

3) Look（動詞）＋ alike（形容詞）
  「そっくりである」

Bob and his brother, Bill really look alike.
「ボブと兄／弟のビルは本当にそっくりです」

lookalike（名詞）
「よく似た人、そっくりさん、うり二つ」

If you ever go to Las Vegas, you will see many men dressed like Elvis Presley. They are called lookalikes, they're impersonators.
「もしあなたがラスベガスに行くことがあったら、エルビス・プレスリーのような格好をした沢山の男性をみるでしょう。彼らのことを物まね役者と言います。」

4) Look（動詞）＋ as if （接続詞）
    Look（動詞）＋ as though （接続詞）
  「〜であるかのように見える」

 It looks as if it were going to rain.
= It look as though it was going to rain.

ほとんどの英語の先生はこの２つは同じ意味だと言います。
なので、同じ意味でこの表現を使って問題ありません。

ただ、

Adamさんが少し違うと思う点があるそうです。

それは、

look as if は、possibility（起こりえる可能性）
もしかすると〜するかもしれない。

look as though は、probability（確率的な可能性）
まるで～するかのように

だそうです。

ん〜🤔、

ちょっと微妙な違いで英語ネイティブスピーカーの方にしか分からないんじゃないでしょうか。

#205 look と look like の使い方

「look と look like の使い方」

です。

下の文には、look と look like のどちらが入るでしょうか。

1. You (     ) happy.
  「あなたは幸せそうです」

2. You (     ) a child.
  「あなたは子供みたいです」

3. You (     ) you need help.
  「あなたは助けが必要そうに見えます」

約1分13秒に "Give it a try!" というのが出てきます。

「試しにやってみよう」

という意味です。

この構文のルールは、

1)  look + adjective（形容詞）

2)  look like + noun（名詞）

イギリス英語では、look + noun（名詞）も言います。

でもアメリカ英語では言わないそうです。
名詞には、look like だそうです。

3)  look like + (S+V)（主語と動詞）

そして、

このルールは下の単語にも適用されます。

teste
feel
sound 

です。
