#90 間違えて憶えている文法 I'm excited

本日は、EnglishAnyone チャンネルさんからです。

チャンネルを運営している Drew さんは長崎から英語のレッスンを発信されています。

Drew さんはアメリカの方なので、私の習得しようとしているイギリス英語の発音とは違いますが、どの動画もとっても丁寧に説明されているので、１年半ほど前に彼の教材を１つ購入しました。

購入したのは 'Phrasal verb' 「句動詞」についての教材です。

今回の動画は 'Phrasal verb' ではなく、

多くの英語学習者が「間違えて憶えている文法」

'This Week In Bad English Grammar - All day or All the day? Small or Little?'

についてです。

では、どんな文法かというと、

1)  'the'  が必要かどうか。

all the time  =  typically / always / usually
「いつも」

'all the time'  というフレーズを聞かれたことがあると思いますが、このフレーズには  'the'  が入っています。

I read all the time.
「本をいつも読んでいます」

I'm studying all the time.
「いつも勉強しています」

ですが、「具体的な時」を表すの場合は、 'the'  は必要ありません。

× all the day ⇒  all day
× all the week ⇒  all week
× all the minute ⇒  all minute
× all the hour ⇒  all hour
× all the season ⇒  all season
× all the class ⇒  all class
× all the period ⇒  all period
× all the game ⇒  all game
× all the meeting ⇒  all meeting
× all the quarter ⇒  all quarter
× all the session ⇒  all session

I study Japanese all the time on the weekend.
「週末はいつも日本語を勉強しています」
I study Japanese all weekend.
「週末は日本語を勉強しています」

「週末に」
on the weekend （アメリカ英語）
at the weekend （イギリス英語）

× all the summer ⇒  all summer
× all the year ⇒  all year

○ all the time

2)  自分が「わくわく」か、他人を「わくわく」させるか。

I'm exciting.
「私は（他人を）わくわくさせる人です」
I'm excited.
「私はわくわくしています」

I'm excited by the idea of taking a trip to France.
「フランスに旅行に行く案にわくわくしています」
I'm excited about doing something.
「何かをすることにわくわくしています」

You are scared by something.
「あなたは何かに怯えています」

3)  「小さい、少ない」

little   /ˈlɪtl/
small   /smɔːl/

'littel' の発音はイギリス英語とアメリカ英語で違います。

イギリス英語は 't' /t/ を発音しますが、アメリカ英語は 't' を、/d/ のように発音します。

▸ サイズ、大きさを表現する場合は両方言えます。

I have a small dinosaur.
I have a little dinosaur.
「小さな恐竜を持っています」

▸ 他の物と比較する場合は、'little' は使えません。

small
smaller
smallest

My vocabulary is smaller than else.
「私の語彙は他の人より少ない」

「語彙が少ない」という他の表現は、
small vocabulary
limited vocabulary

などです。

4)  'a' が必要かどうか。

× How great job you're doing.
○ How great a job you're doing.
「あなたがやっている仕事は素晴らしい」

× I love how a fast you are.
○ I love how fast you are.
「あなたの速さ（スピード感）がとても好きです」

I love how slow you are.
「あなたのゆっくりさがとても好きです」

I love how beautiful you are.
「あなたの美しさがとても好きです」

I love how great you are.
「あなたの偉大さがとても好きです」

I love how great (of) a job you're doing.
「あなたが素晴らしい仕事をしているのがとても好きです」

You're doing a great job.
「あなたは素晴らしい仕事をしています」

です。
