#102 よくある英語の間違い 'There is/There are'

本日は、Espresso Englishチャンネルさんからです。

動画のタイトルは、

"Common English Mistakes: THERE'S... / THERE ARE..."
「よくある英語の間違い」

です。

動画の例は、

× There are a table, a desk, and two chairs in the room.
「部屋の中に、テーブルと机と椅子が２つあります」

で、'There are' は間違いで、

○ There is a table, a desk, and two chairs in the room.
○ There's a table, a desk, and two chairs in the room.

'There is' が正しいです。

どうしてかと言うと、

There is/are の後の最初の単語、

'a table' が『単数』なので、

'There is' になります。

もし最初の単語が『複数』だったら、

’There are’ になります。

上の文の順番を変えると、

○ There are two chairs, a table and a desk in the room.

になります。

周りを見渡して、

'There is ...'   「～がある（単数）」
'There are ...'  「～がある（複数）」

この表現を練習してみて下さい。

例えば、

There is a bed
There is a computer.
There is a dresser.
There is a closet in my room.

There are two lights, a trash can, a backpack in the room. 

dresser  /ˈdresə/  

タンス（アメリカ）、食器棚（イギリス）」

closet   /ˈklɒzɪt/  

「クローゼット」（主にアメリカ）

trash can   /ˈtræʃ ˌkæn/   

「ゴミ箱」
* イギリスでは、rubbish bin    /ˈrʌbɪʃ ˌbɪn/  です。

backpack   /ˈbækˌpæk/   

「リュックサック」

などです。

それから、『短縮形』ですが、

There's はありますが、

There're はないので、

'There are' と書かないといけません。

ただ、

実際には早くしゃべる時は、

There're と英語ネイティブ・スピーカーは発音します。
